What it is: CEXs trade with themselves to inflate volume numbers, making coins look more popular/liquid than they are.
How to spot it:
- Volume spikes with no price movement
- Perfect round number trades (exactly 1.000 BTC)
- Order book depth doesn't match reported volume
- Compare volume across multiple exchanges - if one is 10x higher, sus
⚠️ Real Example: In 2019, Bitwise reported 95% of Bitcoin volume was fake wash trading.
